Frequently asked questions

For clients

Why do people seek therapy?

People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. This may include but is not limited to the following:

  1. Adjusting to change or transitions in life.

  2. Learn healthier coping skills.

  3. Improve the ability to regain balance and process life-altering events, like losing someone.

  4. Processing and healing from past trauma.

  5. To discuss complex issues in a safe, objective clinical space.

  6. Complex relationship issues with family, friends, or colleagues.

How can therapy help me?

The benefits of therapy are specific to your situation, and goals and interventions are unique to your needs and desired outcomes. Therapy can help you become more peaceful, grounded, and confident as you work through the underlying issues contributing to your anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other mental health struggles.

Why pay a therapist when I can talk to my friends or family?

Friends and family members serve as excellent supports, but they often look through a unique lens and may give advice while struggling to be objective. Therapy allows you to explore who you are without judgment. You can be uncensored and unfiltered, so you can explore and integrate aspects of yourself that you might not feel comfortable sharing with others you know.

Will therapy work for me?

Like anything else in life, your chances of succeeding are directly related to your commitment, desire, and effort. You should also expect practical, ethical clinical services from your therapist.

How long does therapy take?

There’s no set end date for therapy, but there’s no obligation, and you can stop whenever it feels right for you. Everyone’s journey and treatment plan play out differently, and the timeline depends on a wide range of factors, including what issues you are addressing and how quickly you make progress.

What should I expect the first time I come in?

Your first session will focus on gathering your psychosocial history, exploring your struggles, and considering treatment goals. Your comfort level in sharing personal issues will be respected from the beginning.

What should I expect from a therapist?

You should expect a supportive, consistent, and attuned therapist knowledgeable with clinical treatment and theoretical modalities that best support treating your needs and who challenges you to grow.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

Your dedication and commitment to the therapeutic process (even when it gets tough) are crucial to your success. This may include but is not limited to the following:

  1. Consistency is critical to reaching your goals.

  2. Development of a strong rapport with your therapist.

  3. A set, weekly time helps makes therapy an expected part of your routine. Having infrequent or inconsistent appointments can lead to forgetting sessions or stunting your growth and development in treatment.

  4. Going to therapy, even when you feel “good,” can be pretty effective.

  5. Practice what you learn during sessions in daily life. Since therapy usually occurs weekly for about 60 minutes, much of the work is done outside the clinical space.
